Of The Holy Name Of Jesus
5/6/7 - The Three
Chapels
Hansom intended that the three chapels
should be vaulted and faced in terracotta
like the porch but lack of funds meant
that they were left unfinished when the
church opened.
In the 1890s Francis Bentley, the architect
of Westminster Cathedral (built by the
then Rector’s brother and former Bishop
of Salford, Cardinal Vaughan), was commissioned
to complete this part of the church.
He knocked the three chapels into one,
paneled and vaulted them in wood and
plaster and designed the altar dedicated
to ‘Our Lady of the Wayside’.
In 1997 these chapels were divided into
three again as the removal of the dividing
walls had weakened the structure to a
degree that was becoming dangerous to
the stability of the south side of the
church.
The original altar is still in position
(7) and the chapel has been restored to
its original decorative scheme as part
of the extensive restoration of the south
side of the church that occurred in 1996/1997
with the help of English Heritage and
the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It is hoped that suitable provision can
be made of the other two chapels, (5)
and (6), as funds etc. become available.
For the time being the Calvary and the
Pieta have been moved there to help create
a devotional atmosphere.
