This year marks the 150th anniversary of the entrance into heaven of the patron saint of parish priests, St John Mary Vianney (Cure d’Ars). The Holy Father, Benedict XVI, has declared this year to be dedicated to the priesthood, from the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, 19th June 2009, until 11th June 2010.
During this year the Holy See has granted both Plenary and Partial Indulgences, for priests and laity.

A Note on Indulgences

The word ‘Indulgence’ comes from the Latin indulgentia, from indulgeo, which means to be kind and tender.  When sin has been forgiven there remains the debt still to be paid for that sin (e.g. if I smash a window the householder may forgive me, but I still have to replace the window - Christianity does not work on the principle of ‘forgive and forget’). An Indulgence is the remission, partially or fully, from the temporal debt that is incurred through sin, which has been forgiven.

This debt is removed either by God’s action in the state of Purgatory, or by my actions  by corporal and spiritual works of mercy, or by the action of the saints through an Indulgence which comes from their merits. So, in this year of the priest, the merits of St John Mary Vianney, and other holy priests known to us like St Philip, and others unknown, are offered to us through the kindness tenderness of God when we seek an Indulgence.
